Jewish Amsterdam
This tour runs through former Jewish districts. Along famous monuments, with one of the most impressive synagogue complexes in the world, but also through a piece of world history. How the Amsterdam Jews, ended up in the 'Jeruzalem of the West’, finally to a large extent were murdered by the Nazis.
The Jewish population, in the 20th century grown to 80,000 people, has given a lot to the city. Knowledge of trade with the Mediterranean countries, knowledge about tobacco and the diamond trade. The city is full of Jewish monuments. Among other things, one of the most the impressive synagogues-complexes in the world: around the Mr. Vissersplein you will find 6 (former) synagogues.
The war
During the walk through former Jewish neighborhoods we tell about the horrific fate of the Jewish population in the second world war – it was largely exterminated. Step by step we follow the destruction process. We go along the Auschwitzmonument in the Wertheimpark of Jan Wolkers, the famous statue ‘Dock Worker’, the building of the Jewish Council, and the Hollandsche Schouwburg, where a small exhibition is to be seen.
